When Kate marries William, she will become a Princess, not a Queen. If Queen Elizabeth II dies or steps down, Prince William isn’t the first in line. His father, Prince Charles is. If Prince Charles takes the crown, then William would have to wait until his father dies or gives up the crown. But, if Prince Charles chooses to decline the crown, then, and only then would Prince William would become King William, and Kate would be Queen.
If William declines, then Harry would be next in line.
TECHNICALLY, Kate and William aren’t Princess and Prince at all (Well, William KINDA is, but officially…), they’re Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Prince Charles and his brother (Andrew?) are the only PRINCES. Princes William and Harry are the SONS of a prince, so technically, they AREN’T princes, but it’s just easier to call them that, and everyone does out of habit. Similarly Princesses Beatrice and the one I can never remember the name of aren’t actually princesses. They’re Duchesses of a certain city or section of England, but I’m not sure which.
When Queen Elizabeth II dies (it’s highly unlikely she’ll step down… that’s not really what’s supposed to happen, and has only happened once in all of England’s history, with her uncle), Prince Charles will become KING Charles, and Camilla (Charles’ wife) will become Queen Mother Camilla, but will go by just Queen Camilla, unless referred to indirectly, in which case she will be called the Queen Mother. The Duke of Cambridge (William) will then become the official Prince of England. Again, it would be highly unlikely for Charles to pass up becoming King, so we can assume that will never happen.
When Charles dies, Prince William will step up to become King of England, similarly assuming he will not pass up becoming King, because it doesn’t happen. Catherine will then become Queen Mother Catherine, otherwise known as Queen Catherine or the Queen Mother. Both Catherine and Camilla will be known as Queen Mother because they aren’t of royal bloodline — that is, no one in their close family history was noble, and they are not the daughters of a King or Queen. However, they’re married to a King and birthed princes and princesses, so they are the Queen Mother. That’s where that phrase comes from.
I'm just sitting here trying to finish my government homework, and I get on Tumblr, and everyone's like, BTW, new DHp2 trailer, and I'm like AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I MUST SEE 6,000,000,000,000 TIMESSSSSS.
“During his presidency, no one ever questioned whether George W. Bush was qualified to attend Yale or Harvard Business School. Yet, he was a C student and an individual with no personal achievements other than his last name. Generations of Bushes had attended Yale, which is why W was admitted. It is assumed that he, like others before him, deserved it. White privilege is normalized in a society where a number of people still believe that an African-American does not deserve to attend an Ivy League school, much less become leader of the free world. Now that [Obama] is president, they must delegitimize him by claiming he is not a citizen, and that he was a bad student.”—
